Didn't happen before he was Captain. It's not like he had great form which dipped after he was made Captain - his batting has always been average.

He probably won't be though and there lies the problem. I think it says it all when Wakely has said he wasn't enjoying the captaincy anymore and this may have affected performance. Good on him to quit, but why hadn't Ripley done something about this earlier, if there was clearly a problem? I have said for over a year that captaining the CC and one-day side for such a long term was too bis a burden for Wakely.

It seems to me that Ripley has become somewhat complacent regarding certain players, thinking they are better than their record proves. Perhaps he should remind himself that this attitude was a key reason for Capel's downfall. Keogh and Wakely are both examples of this lack of objectivity. Keogh has performed OK with the bat so far this year, but arguably should not even still be in the Northants squad after his last 2 seasons. More to the point, he is in the side as an all-rounder, which his bowling simply does not warrant. I hope that Wakely himself has only been in the side due to his captain's role, because otherwise his record suggests he shouldn't be there.

The side needs a shake-up and if this means blooding more young players and making some bold decisions in the CC then it should be done. We are already in a position where promotion looks a very remote possibility so what is there to lose. To me there are only 4 or 5 of the current squad who should currently be guaranteed a starting place in the CC line-up: Vasconcelos, Newton (when fit), Rossington, Bavuma (we have to assume his class will show at some point), Sanderson (if fit). The rest should depend on form and if not enough players are on form, blood youngsters.

Same with Newton every season - starts off - does ok - gets injured - makes sporadic appearances for the remainder of the season with little effect.

The problems at the club are deeply embedded now. The statement about Wakely was like the eulogy at Churchill's funeral for goodness sake.

It started back when we decided to become a T20 specialist team. Decided not to have any proper spinners at the club (and this at a club with such a rich tradition of great spin bowlers). Decided not to have any proper opening batsmen in the team. Decided it was fun to have a team of fat, unfit, boozed up jokers instead of committed, fit, driven winners. Decided it was fine for our captain to be a batsman who averages about 30 in second division cricket. Decided the fans didn't deserve a decent website or to be given any proper information about the club they have supported, in many cases, for decades. Etc.

Are Graeme White and Tom Sole not proper spinners, then? The problem is not that we don't have them, but that we don't play them.

White has 'retired' from first class cricket. We have Sole and Zaib but no idea if they are anywhere near the required level yet.

Indeed - White's very odd career went from picked for England or Lions or whatever to never playing again in about five minutes. He certainly is not a championship option for us for whatever reason. As to this guy Sole - who the hell knows. This from the club of Monty, Brown, Davies, Swann etc - in even in recent years.

Well maybe it's time to find out. Zaib had a few consecutive matches in the CC for us last year without pulling up any trees as a batsman or bowler. Sole has broken into the Scotland one day side and done OK. Perhaps we should decide whether he's at the required level by giving him a try.
