Northants announce second overseas player for t20's - Dwayne Pretorius. Should be good.

Can't fault overseas recruitment efforts this year.

Thinking aloud about T20 team - maybe:
Levi
Rossington
Cobb
Wakeley
Pretorius
Vasconcelos
Keogh
Ashraf
Procter
Sanderson
Muzarabani

So far, this season has felt as depressing as last. The squad seems very thin. Already we have had to search out desperately for rejects from other counties to prop up the team - with players coming in and out for the odd game and then returning to clubs. How does that help develop any consistency or team spirit?

The same players are failing year after year - and younger players are not given enough chance to develop and learn.

We did superbly well to get Holder for a short time but we have won only one game this year, and now he is injured.

We can only hope that the overseas players we are yet to see - there are quite a few of them - perform well and that some of the regulars are able to sustain consistency at a higher level than thier norm.

I see that we even have Azhar back playing for us against Pakistan today!! I mean....really??

I only know of two overseas players to come - Ashraf and Pretorius, both for the T20.

But I agree whole-heartedly with Nick's comments.

Every year, without fail, a third of the squad is injured by the end of April. And instead of giving a youngster a chance, we recruit someone who can't get into the team where they are. Sometimes it works (Holden, Libby) but unless we can turn their loan spells into a permanent move, I'd prefer it if we didn't just act as a work experience provider for other clubs' squad members.

Not that he's a youngster (only three years younger than Azharullah), but what's happened to our supposed 'white ball specialist' (Graeme White) - surely we've now played 6 'white ball' games and there's been no mention of him?

Quite right - I had forgotten him. "He will join the club between May and July 2019, boosting the County's batting line-up for eight Specsavers County Championship matches." says the NCCC website.

Oddly he only seems to appear there. He is not mentioned for example on the BBC's guide to county ins and outs.

We seem to be a bit thin on the ground in terms of both seamers and specialist spinners.

Re seamers, has Ben Cotton left? Do we only therefore have Sanderson, Buck, Muzarabani, Hutton and Procter as first team squad seamers? Even with the temporary help of Holder this seems to be poor planning if it's true.

Graeme White seems to have been completely forgotten despite being our only specialist one day spinner. Only Tom Sole of the rest is what I would call a specialist spinner, but we seem to favour bits and pieces spinners like Keogh, Cobb and Zaib in all forms of the game. These players at best hold up an end but rarely take more than the occasional wicket and will hardly ever IMHO win us a match with the ball.

I read somewhere that Cotton left as he wasn't fit?

Sent on his way, by all accounts, for failing to meet fitness level requirements... i.e. overweight!

And yet another short term loan joins us - Overton for Somerset - but he can still play for them in the one day final while he is playing for us?! Ripley again talking about four seamers out injured - who are they? We have Sanderson, Buck, Blessing, Hutton - that's it isn't it? Not aware any of them being injured - let alone all four....

Brooks, Willey, Stone and Gleeson - NCCC site probably doesn't know they've left.

I was sufficently narked that I noised them up on Twitter. At least they replied - I was told the four injured were Blessing, Hutton, Cotton and Jack White. They did note Cotton was no longer at the club (which surely discounts him as being injured? Might as well say that Tony Penberthey has a groin strain at the moment). I asked who jack White was. They didn't reply. I then found out that White, Cotton and Hutton all played and bowled for the seconds last week - I asked them about this and they said Hutton was playing but not ready for first team action. No mention of Jack White - who is listed actually as C White as his name is Curtley Jack White - let's hope he is as good as our other Curtley......They did not reply to my question about why we went into the season so thin on seamers (or spinners for that matter....).

Seems disingenous to keep talking about injuries and counting players who don't actually play for us (why is he playing in the seconds then?) or players who never have played for the first team (like White). But then that feels like recent Northants all over. All over - the place!

3 loans so early in the season shows how crazy the winter recruitment was! Personally I think we are mis-using the system, starting the season with a thin squad and always knowing that loans would be brought in to make up the numbers.

It's all getting very strange. 2 loan bowlers used again in the last match yet Hutton told me that he was fit to play. Meanwhile sacked Ben Cotton opens the bowling with Azharullah in the seconds. We don't even seem to be trying to develop young bowlers.

And another one arrives - Matt Coles playing for us today. How oyu get any team spirit or flow with pplayers coming in and out on an almost weekly basis I have no idea. Odd way to run a club.
