Small article in "The Cricket Paper" today along the same lines. I reckon if they do find some sponsorship they will top up the money. Monty is not in a position to attract magabucks as he was when he first left.

Monty is off to Barbados with the County we read. You take good advantage mate, people often don't get a second chance! The World my son is your lobster!!

The next phase of Monty's career... best of luck to him!

Although not a Northants (or Sussex, or Essex!) supporter, I always enjoyed watching Monty bowl, and he was certainly our best left arm spinner since Phil Edmonds (and maybe even better than he was), so I absolutely agree that all cricket fans should wish him well in this new endeavour.

Interestingly I remember a programme on radio about Monty a year or so ago when the point was made that he seemed to have a natural flair for coaching (in that case youngsters, I think). I'd love to seem him playing regularly and successfully again, but coaching a new (& much needed) generation of English spinners would be almsot as good.

The fact that there has been no official word from the County as to Monty's future would suggest he will not be playing again for Northants, although some reports say he could be involved in pre-season training at the County Ground.  With outside financial assistance being required to enable him to take the field last year, the chances are that similar circumstances could apply again, making a re-appearance unlikely.

Thanks Bucksman.

Having seen Udal and Batty, for example, playing for the national side near the end of their playing careers you can sympathise in that respect that he still hopes to play for England once more.

It will be interesting to see if he will get a fc county in 2017, or turn out in minor county cricket like Udal did on first retirement from Hants before moving to Middx. With fc counties developing their own spin bowling talent, as encouraged by the EWCB, perhaps Glam and Warks would be the most unlikely destinations for Monty as they are led by ex-Test spinners.

Monty back at Northants in April, I'm told. He has yet to decide on playing due to slow recovery from shoulder injury. I would go with White in red ball.

Brave appearance by Monty on Celebrity Mastermind! Despite his impressive specialist knowledge, his general knowledge let him down... but then, none of the others particularly shone in that respect.
