Cracking performance from the lad.....

Where did he come from though? And Walker?

Lets hope one of these two is the real deal.....

We seem to have TONS of youngsters coming through who never push on. Look at the latest list of "possibles".

Carey
Morgan
Brown
Bull
Murphy
Lawlor

Time will tell with regard to Douthwaite. What I was most impressed with was the shots he played when they had the rate down to a run a ball. He started playing classic shots with a straight bat and looked much better for it. He looked very comfortable and maybe he can take that into the 4 day games. It does not solve our top of the order problems. He joins a group of 4 or 5 players who could adequately fill 1 or 2 slots in the middle order.

I am really interested to see the selection for next week. Looking through the One day campaign I think there are a number of winners and losers in the squad:

Winners
Root - He enhances his reputation. 18th in the batting averages with 386@64.
Carey - Performed well with the new ball and while he did not pick up many wickets he had the lowest econo9my rate at 5.2 while bowling in the power play and put the pressure on for the others to capitalise.
Lawlor - Got a number of starts and was never quite able to capitalise. Unlucky not to get a 50 yesterday but filled the opening slot and will hopefully push on.
Douthwaite - Grabbed the headlines yesterday and will be interesting to see how he does in the 4 day game. Might not be available next week but expect him to appear after Uni.
Cooke - I want to applaud Cooke for stepping up to 3 and scoring 337@42. Hopefully this will lead to more runs in the CC. However I am not sure the captaincy is going so well and his glove work seems to be suffering. The problem is that there are not many players in the squad who are guaranteed a place in the starting XI. The only other candidate might be Lloyd but I am not sure he has captained much.
Maynard - Seems to have got some belief into the team and success from backing some youngsters. I am sure it is a happier dressing room than last year.

Losers
Labuschagne - Has not done his Ashes hopes much good with his performances in this competition with 123@18 in games when scores have been high. Hopefully will pick up again in the 4 day comp.
Hemphrey - Not much better than Labuschagne with 134 runs @ 22. His place might be under pressure.
Carlson - 25 runs from 4 innings. Competition for places in the middle order might mean he has to score some runs in the 2nds.
Meschede - Did not have the success opening as he did in the T20 last year. Out with injury but Lawlor has moved in. One of a group of similar looking players.
Lloyd - Struggled when asked to open having made a good start to the competition batting at 4. Could be classed as a winner after the first 3 games but you are only as good as your last performance. Am sure he will be back.
Wagg - Has been steady throughout the competition but given the emergence of some of the young players it would be wrong for him to continue playing in the 4 day side if we are looking to build a team for the future. If we want a left arm seamer I would rather see McIlroy given a chance. Otherwise there are the likes of Douthwaite, Smith and Meschede to fill the 4th seamer slot.
Hogan - Coming up to 38 it is no surprise that Hogan is slowing down. As far as I understand an injury has kept him out recently but as with Wagg I would use him sparingly in the 4 day comp in order to allow the youngsters who have shown promise to play alongside De Lange and TvdG.
Salter (and all the other specialist spinners) - deemed surplus to requirements with Labuschagne and Root. Would have hoped he would have exerted more control in the middle overs and as a result the opposition would not have scored so many runs. Not sure when we will see him especially with Ingram's leg spin in the T20. However Salter did a good job in the T20 last year. Hopefully we will get some turning wickets as the summer progresses.

So interesting selection decisions for next week. My guess:
Lawlor
Selman or Hemphrey - Selman has not really been scoring many runs in the 2nds
Labuschagne
Lloyd
Root
Cooke
Douthwaite - might not be available so Meschede or Smith if either are fit or Wagg
Would like to see a specialist spinner but not sure if any good enough.
TvdG
De Lange
Carey

I am sure many will not agree with my assessment but it was fun to write and it is great to have some positives to report.

I agree with most of those points.

I don't think Hemphrey's position should be under threat quite yet, as he did get a big score a couple of games ago and he needs time to reacclimatize to U.K. conditions.

Also, just a personal thing, but for me the only important thing right now is what is the best XI. The ages of the players should not be so important. The younger players will have plenty of chances as the season goes on (and indeed have already had quite a lot of playing time).

Agree that we should be fielding the strongest XI but when the calls are marginal I would go with the youngster as long as there enough experienced players around. I am not sure Wagg and Hogan are playing well enough to clearly deserve a place in the 4 day side and the likes of De Lange and TvdG have the experience now. Carey is getting there with 20 first class games. It would be better to play them now on the back of the successes over recent weeks rather than after a few losses.
