Interesting opportunity on the website to select your XI for the first Championship game. Not sure what happens to the submissions? Perhaps they will aggregate all the responses to decide the team?
Shouldn't there have been an option for, "Please God make at least one more signing!!!".
We have a sizeable squad with a number having to show some form this season if they want to remain. Does not look as though we will see any additions now other than a stand-in for Labuschagne when he is away and another overseas for the T20.
By my calculations the majority of the squad only have contracts until the end of this coming season:
McIlroy - not see anything of
Sisodiya - just played two T20s last season taking 1 wicket for 70. Only 21.
Brown - no 1st team games last season so needs to score a lot of 2nd team runs
Bull - hopefully surgery has sorted out his back but opportunities might be limited to Championship games when Labuschagne not playing and spin needed
Carey - Less effective last year with 19 wickets in 9 CC games at 40. Reasonable economy in one-day cup. Needs to push on but expect him to be retained.
Carlson - Showed such promise and needs a better season. Still at Uni so may be limited early season.
Wagg - Slight surprise he was resigned and cannot go on much longer despite his fitness. Would expect him to play white ball games and not red.
Taylor - Four T20s last season. Can bat and bowl but not sure if either is quite good enough. Needs to score plenty of 2nd team runs.
TvdG - Injury hit season. Hope to see him back and fit. Not sure if Brexit will impact upon him but might be OK on residence. Expect to see him still here in 2021.
Meschede - Just three 50-over games last season in which he scored 10 runs nd took 1 wicket. Season hit by injury but has been overtaken by Smith for all-rounder slot and unless he forces his way in to the 1st team and performs well this could be his last season. Do not see the need for him, Smith and Douthwaite even when Wagg retires.
Hogan - who knows how long Hogan will play for.
Root - was signed on a 2-year contract. Good first season despite fading late on and expect him to carry on and be around for a while.
Cullen - Back up keeper and showed ability with bat so will want to keep him around. Is 28 so not a youngster.
Morgan - I was surprised to see him resigned and am not sure where he fits into the side. Needs a big season to be around next year.
I have not seen anything about Selman renewing his contract, which was due to end last year, but would assume he has been offered one. The rest of the squad all have contracts until the end of 2021.
